Outbid 30 Years Ago, Eduardo Costantini Finally Won This Leonora Carrington Masterpiece at Auction
Thirty years ago, Eduardo F. Costantini stopped bidding on Leonora Carrington’s ‘Les Distractions de Dagobert’ when the price began to climb. He regretted it ever since.
In a standout, record-breaking moment during the Modern Evening Auction at Sotheby's, Costantini finally won the Surrealist masterpiece for a staggering $28.5 million following a 10-minute bidding battle that smashed the artist’s previous auction record.
The work will be exhibited at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, which Costantini founded in 2001. A fan of the work for all these years, he remarked that Carrington’s whimsical depiction of King Dagobert I is “one of the most admired works in the history of surrealism and an unparalleled masterpiece of Latin American art.”

A celebration of the simple pleasure derived from dancing among friends, the painting...

when people dont know what to do with their money...
The auctioneer is great and Sotheby's looks like great place to work if you're okay with ignoring how many of the artifacts get stolen from other countries to magically appear there. Sotheby's literally created a hidden industry of robbers who steal artifacts well after colonization
Sad to see that he is struggling financially and has to sell his watch collection.
Destiny fulfilled
Getting shallow Rocky!!!!
He's selling them because watches are losing their value and have little intrinsic value.
Great story - Congratulations!
Oh this was truly wonderful to see. So happy he got the piece. Bravo!!!
Inspiring story. Incredibly happy for Mr. Costantini and Argentina’s art community. Enjoy!
time flows in one direction . and that's why i only have ONE watch
THIS IS A TRUE COLLECTOR !! MONEY IS NOTHING, WHEN YOUR DESIRE IS THAT STRONG, YOU CAN SPEND EVERYTHING YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO LIVE WITH YOUR BELOVED ARTWORK <3
You can see how much he loves this piece. Beautiful
Pleased to see a female artist fetching such high prices. I love this painting by Leonara.
😭😭😭❤ SO HAPPY FOR HIM It is not 1 painting, it is a multiplicity of WORLDS. You could look for a lifetime and see a new each time. Never heard of this artist now I must look for her. Thank you, I love discovering new loves 💘 .
great deal, will sell for much higher in the not too distant future if the buyer chooses to sell
What an amazing speaker. She oozes with charisma, gravitas
I'll take my old Timex any day! It tells me the time just like those expensive watches do!
From 300,000. to 24,000,000!! Wow what a love story. I’m happy to know that it’s going to a museum instead of a living room. Congratulations sir!
Love seeing people who truly love art
0816 Sat 18/05/24 ...mmm...foreplay n gang bang n pre orgy...in da country....in da country...in da country... lol
For me, watches are about being able to show people how rich I am. It's not about time, it's about owning something really tells people, "I am better than you" lolz
He will have ghost buyers getting it back
CAN I GET ONE PLZ
Gracias !!!! 🙏♥️
He probably puts the same amount of thought into his silverware, small appliances, furniture, and suits and shoes. Notice how all those weren’t encrusted and flashy as hell... just the finest you can buy; usually with a personal life story of where he was and who he was with. Mans got class
I am so glad that people will be able to experience this wonderful painting.
Why?
Finally
Lo veremos en el MALBA !!! Gracias Eduardo Constantini!!
Thank you for putting this video together. I had watched the bidding on UA-cam. Bidding was very exciting. The painting is so gorgeous, how can one put a price on it? This video also gives one a chance to take a closer look and enjoy the fine details of Carrington's work. Congratulations, Mr. Constantini. Enjoy this wonderful painting for a long time and in good health. I hope you will also often share it with others.🖌🖼👏🤗
His wife will be enjoying it for a much longer time. She is only 33 years old.
What an amazing story. Thank you for sharing your perspective on this masterpiece and for allowing it to be displayed for the world to see in Buenos Aires.
I am happy Mr. Costantini was reunited with this painting. The Universe has made it so. Congratulations!
I love malBA museun! They have a great collection!
A must visit!
@@sothebys One day, may be!… Thanks..
Qué maravilla
Cheers Edu
What the scam 😂
Eduardo is a billionaire. I doubt he has been scammed.
Que bueno. La veremos de cerca nosotros también.
Investment pieces 💲 other than that watches are almost useless. Time is an illusion concept of your consciousness
Hi Mr. Stallone, I own a Timex watch that does nothing else other than telling the time. Oh, it has Indiglo which allows you to see the time in the dark. I wear it whenever I leave my home. I often dreamed of having a nice watch (something in the $200 range), but if you would like to have my watch, I wouldn't mind passing it on to you to enjoy. You could wear this watch and when people see it on your wrist they would think "Oh, that's not Sly, the guy wearing that Timex is broke". 😂
Al menos lo he intentado.
F the watch , I want that bow he had in Rambo III.
The fact that in 1945 she was 28 and pregnant when she was creating this painting is a +
0145 Sat 18/05/24 ..just saw video interview of buyer constantini posted by sotheby's...amazing story of love of art paintings...well done for waiting 30 years to try your luck again and win the bid this time...great story...
"I thought it would have been so much more effective if John Wayne had still been alive so he could explain to his fans what some of his pieces meant to him,” Stallone told the Associated Press in July. From A.P.
